Degree Confluencing
This has nothing to do with University but it could be a little about education…and a great new way to enjoy your leisure time!
Anyone into this new sport/adventure/pursuit/hobby?
This is a great idea! Basically, you get yourself a GPS reader and search for those places on the earth where the degrees of latitude and longitude consist of exact whole numbers (integers) that intersect with each other, eg 53 deg N by 12 deg East would probably be somewhere in Germany. You then take photographs of that spot and upload them to a specific website which stores them from all over the world. See the confluence.org website for more info and for more details of how to do this.
Of the world’s 64,000 such points of intersection, 16,000 are on land, and coincidentally none of them are in large cities so it means you have to get out and about and explore the wide outdoors. The nearest ones to Basel are just East of Freiburg in Germany, and just West of Neuchatel to the south of Basel. There are a total of five such points in Switzerland.
What better way to motivate yourself to go rambling and exploring? Please send in your photos of any Swiss confluence points you visit and we’ll publish them here for you too.
