Fluh – Landskron – Leymen (2 hours)

Overview

A good beginners walk with a very hard climb to begin. Start in Switzerland, cross into France, have a wonderful view of the whole Basel area, followed by a gentle descent to Leymen in France, and then back to Fluh via Tram No 10.

Directions

From the Fluh tram station walk away from the tramlines in the direction of Mariastein with the Landskron Restaurant on your right. Cross the road to France, and walk straight ahead towards the hill.

Walk to the top of the hill, around the double bend and turn right into Tannwaldweg. Follow the signs to Landskron – you will soon see it ahead of you with a beautiful view to Basel on your right.

Keep on walking past the Restaurant on your left as the track drifts around to the right. Keep going past the gate, and after about 400 metres you will be at the Landskron, built for one of the followers of the Bishop of Basel in 1295. Not a big Castle, but plenty of ruins to keep the kids happy. The view from the top is definitely worth all of your hard work.

On the way back from Landskron, go back down the track, past the gate again, and then take the first path on your right by the signpost showing Landskron and Mariastein (strangely there is no pointer for Leymen). You will at first think you have taken the wrong path, but continue on. The path wanders gently through the forest until you reach a small road.

Turn right on this road which leads to the French village of Leymen. Follow the road down, cross the tramlines and turn right. The tram station is about 200 metres away, one stop from Fluh (Timetable). Either wait for a tram on the right hand platform, or walk along the road to Fluh.

Allow 2 hours for beginners, plus time at the Landskron for looking around, eating a picnic, letting the kids play or whatever. The view from the top of the Castle is truly excellent – one of the very best of Basel that encompasses the Vosges mountains in France, the Schwarzwald in Germany, and the Jura in Switzerland with the Rhine valley winding between all of them with Basel in the centre.

Thank you very much for the introduction of this breathtaking and healthy walk. I had the chance to enjoy a beautiful hike alone surrounded with great nature and fresh air which helped me enrich my day in a very spiritual way. Great 2 hours hike for a lonely day!
